1938 Raleigh Sports Roadster
The Sporting Roadster
By the late 1930s, bicycles were becoming lighter, faster and increasingly versatile. Raleigh's Sports Roadster reflected this shift, combining the practicality of a traditional roadster with a more refined frame design aimed at riders seeking both everyday transport and leisure cycling.
The model proved so successful that Raleigh continued producing variations of the same basic frame for decades. This particular example has been restored to closely reflect its 1938 specification, complete with Lucas lighting equipment, an Ashby Sports Rack and the correct Lycett sprung saddle. The sole exception is a later Sturmey-Archer four-speed hub fitted by a previous owner, retained as part of the bicycle's history.
The Restoration
The restoration focused on returning the bicycle to its original appearance while preserving as much authentic material as possible. Original components were restored and refinished, while the frame received a faithful recreation of the 1938 catalogue paint scheme, including the distinctive gold head tube and period-correct decals.
Particular attention was paid to the bicycle's unique Raleigh cable system. Unlike conventional cables, these integrated designs require specialist manufacturing techniques, and replacement examples were produced in-house using traditionally cast cable ends to match the originals.
The Result
The finished Sports Roadster demonstrates why this design remained in production for so many years. Elegant, practical and mechanically sophisticated, it represents an important step in the evolution of British bicycle design before the Second World War.
Restored with careful attention to both detail and function, it remains a highly authentic example of one of Raleigh's most influential and enduring models.
