1982 Raleigh Grifter XL
The End of an Era
Introduced in the 1970s, the Raleigh Grifter built upon the success of the Chopper, offering young riders a tougher, more versatile alternative to traditional children's bicycles. With its distinctive frame, chunky tyres and motorcycle-inspired styling, the Grifter became one of the defining British youth bikes of its generation.
By 1982, however, cycling culture was changing rapidly. BMX had arrived and was quickly capturing the attention of young riders. As tastes shifted, the Grifter's popularity declined, bringing an end to one of Raleigh's most successful youth bicycle ranges..
The Restoration
This example survived in unusually good condition, allowing much of the original specification to be retained. The majority of components were carefully cleaned, polished and restored, preserving as much original material as possible.
The rims had deteriorated beyond practical repair and were replaced with period-correct alternatives before being re-chromed. The frame was refinished in its original black and red colour scheme, while the distinctive neon-inspired decal artwork was recreated to accurately reflect the bold styling that defined the model.
The Result
The finished Grifter captures the confidence and character of early 1980s bicycle design. Combining robust construction with unmistakable styling, it demonstrates why the model remained so popular despite growing competition from BMX.
Today, surviving Grifters are increasingly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, representing the final chapter of Raleigh's hugely influential youth bicycle range before BMX reshaped the market entirely.
