Raleigh Chopper MK1
The Bicycle That Changed Everything
Introduced in 1969, the Raleigh Chopper was unlike anything that had come before it. Drawing inspiration from American dragsters, muscle cars and custom motorcycles, it was designed to appeal directly to a new generation of young riders. With its long seat, high-rise handlebars and distinctive silhouette, the Chopper quickly became one of the most recognisable bicycles ever produced.
The model arrived at a challenging time for the British bicycle industry, yet proved an enormous commercial success. Its impact was so significant that it is often credited with helping revive Raleigh's fortunes and remains one of the most influential bicycle designs of the twentieth century.
The Restoration
This project was approached as a sympathetic restoration, with an emphasis on preserving original material wherever possible. Many components were carefully cleaned, restored and refinished, while some age-related wear was intentionally retained at the owner's request.
As with the original design, the Sturmey-Archer three-speed hub remained central to the bicycle. First introduced decades earlier, the hub represented a remarkable continuity of British engineering, while Raleigh's distinctive gear shifter reflected the automotive influences that shaped the Chopper's design.
The Result
The finished bicycle retains the qualities that made the Chopper such a cultural phenomenon: bold styling, distinctive engineering and an unmistakable sense of identity. By balancing restoration with preservation, the project maintains the authenticity of the original machine while presenting at its very best.
Today, the MK1 Chopper remains one of the most sought-after British bicycles ever produced, valued not only for its design but for the lasting influence it had on an entire generation of riders.
