Motobecane 1978

A Modern Approach to Racing

By the late 1970s, cycling was entering a period of rapid change. Traditional steel frame construction remained largely unchanged, but manufacturers were increasingly experimenting with bold graphics, advanced paint finishes and new component technologies. French manufacturer Motobécane was at the forefront of this movement, producing bicycles that looked distinctly more modern than many of their contemporaries.

The Grand Record exemplified this approach. Its striking pearlescent finish, contemporary styling and Shimano componentry reflected a new direction in racing bicycle design, one that would become increasingly influential during the decades that followed.

The Restoration

The restoration centred on recreating the distinctive appearance that made the bicycle stand out when new. The frame was stripped and refinished in a carefully matched pearlescent yellow, replicating the depth and character of the original finish.

Chrome components were restored, missing parts sourced and decals recreated using original references. The bicycle was rebuilt to closely reflect its original specification, with the exception of the racing tubular wheelset fitted by its original owner, a period modification retained as part of the machine's history.

The Result

The finished Grand Record captures the optimism and innovation that characterised late-1970s cycling design. Its combination of advanced styling, lightweight construction and early Shimano equipment illustrates a period when the industry's centre of gravity was beginning to shift.

Completed over the course of twelve months, the restoration returns the bicycle to a standard worthy of one of Motobécane's most distinctive racing models and preserves an important chapter in the evolution of modern road cycling.
