Holdsworth Cyclone 1947

A South London Lightweight

Founded in 1926, Holdsworth became one of Britain's most respected frame builders, producing lightweight bicycles that combined refined handling with understated craftsmanship. Introduced before the Second World War, the Cyclone sat amongst the company's most desirable models and helped establish Holdsworth's reputation amongst touring and club cyclists alike.

Built in 1947, this example emerged during a period when British manufacturers were rebuilding after wartime restrictions. Material shortages remained common, placing even greater emphasis on skilled framebuilding and efficient design. More than seventy-five years later, the bicycle returned to South London for restoration.

The Restoration

Remarkably, the bicycle retained its original specification, providing an excellent foundation for a historically accurate restoration. The frame was stripped to bare steel before being refinished using a traditional baked enamel process, chosen to recreate the depth and character of period finishes.

The frame lining was reapplied by hand, following the original lugwork and file detailing. Decals were recreated in-house using archival references to ensure accuracy in both design and placement. Throughout the project, the objective was not to reinterpret the bicycle, but to restore the craftsmanship present when it first left the Holdsworth workshop.

The Result

The finished Cyclone reflects the qualities that made the model so highly regarded: restrained design, careful detailing and an emphasis on function over decoration. Every aspect of the restoration was approached with the same philosophy, preserving the character of the original machine while returning it to the standard its builders intended.

Today, it stands as an excellent example of post-war British framebuilding and a reminder of the remarkable quality emerging from London's cycling industry during this period.
