Hetchins Tandem

One of Cycling's Great Design Icons

Few bicycle manufacturers have developed a reputation quite like Hetchins. Founded by Harry Hetchins in the 1930s, the company became renowned for producing some of the most distinctive frames ever built, combining advanced lightweight construction with elaborate detailing and unmistakable styling. Their bicycles were engineered to perform, but equally designed to stand apart from anything else on the road.

Tandems are among the rarest and most technically ambitious Hetchins models. Combining the marque's signature craftsmanship with the additional complexity of a two-rider frame, they represent some of the most sought-after examples of British framebuilding.

The Restoration

Given the significance of the bicycle, historical accuracy guided every stage of the restoration. The objective was to return the tandem to its original specification whilst preserving as much authentic material as possible.

Original components were restored wherever feasible, with replacement parts only produced where no viable alternative existed. The frame was refinished using period-correct techniques, the chrome work fully restored, and the decal set recreated using original references. Throughout the project, every decision was made to preserve the character and integrity of the original machine.

The Result

The finished tandem reflects the qualities that have made Hetchins one of the most admired names in cycling: exceptional craftsmanship, distinctive design and uncompromising attention to detail. Restored with accuracy and restraint, it remains true to the vision that made the marque so influential.

Today it stands as a remarkable example of British framebuilding at its most ambitious and a reminder of why Hetchins bicycles continue to command such respect amongst collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
