1947 Raleigh Dawn Tourist

Bridging Two Eras

In the years immediately following the Second World War, Raleigh's range reflected a period of transition in British cycling. Riders could choose between traditional roadsters, designed primarily for utility, and the increasingly popular lightweight sports bicycles that offered a more responsive ride.

The Dawn Tourist occupied a unique position between the two. Combining the smaller wheels and improved handling of the Sports range with the upright riding position and rod brakes of a traditional roadster, it represented Raleigh's attempt to blend modern developments with familiar design. Features such as hub gears, dynamo lighting and integrated controls reflected the steady evolution of everyday cycling during this period.

The Restoration

This restoration focused on returning the bicycle to a specification closely aligned with the original catalogue offering. Correct period Sturmey-Archer lighting equipment and controls were sourced to complement the bicycle's distinctive touring specification.

Like many post-war Raleighs, the machine presented a number of challenges. The original Sturmey-Archer hub required a complete overhaul due to extensive internal wear, while the frame and brightwork underwent extensive refinishing. Particular attention was paid to preserving the bicycle's unusual fully-chromed specification, a feature less commonly encountered during a period when material shortages often resulted in painted components being used instead.

The Result

The finished Dawn Tourist demonstrates why transitional bicycles such as this are so fascinating. Combining elements of both the traditional roadster and the emerging sports bicycle, it captures a moment when British manufacturers were redefining what an everyday bicycle could be.

Carefully restored and correctly equipped, it stands today as an excellent example of post-war Raleigh design and the technical innovations that would shape British cycling for decades to come.
