1973 Freddie Grubb Racing Bike

A Name Synonymous with British Racing

Few names carry the same weight in British cycling as Freddie Grubb. An Olympic medallist, national champion and successful framebuilder, Grubb's bicycles became renowned for their quality, performance and attention to detail. By the 1970s, his name remained firmly associated with the traditions of British lightweight cycling.

This particular bicycle dated from 1973 and arrived with a remarkably complete original specification. The brief was straightforward: preserve as much of the original machine as possible while returning it to the condition expected of a high-quality racing bicycle from the period.

The Restoration

Throughout the project, restoration took priority over replacement. Original components were carefully refurbished wherever possible, with only missing items being replaced using period-correct equivalents sourced through original Freddie Grubb catalogues and reference material.

The frame was refinished in a flamboyant red, complemented by contrasting panel work in keeping with the styling of the era. New decals were recreated and produced in-house, ensuring the finished bicycle remained faithful to the original specification and appearance.

The Result

The finished bicycle captures the qualities that made Freddie Grubb machines so highly regarded: elegant proportions, thoughtful detailing and purposeful design. While visually restored, it remains fundamentally the same bicycle that left the workshop in 1973.

Projects such as this demonstrate the value of careful restoration over wholesale replacement. By preserving as much of the original machine as possible, the character, craftsmanship and identity of the bicycle remain intact.
