Chaterlea Tandem Circa 1950
Engineering for Two
Few names are as closely associated with British cycling engineering as Chater Lea. Established in London in the late nineteenth century, the company built its reputation producing exceptionally well-made components and complete bicycles, prized for their quality, durability and attention to detail.
By the 1950s, Chater Lea tandems represented the pinnacle of practical touring design. Built to carry two riders in comfort and confidence, they demanded a level of engineering and framebuilding far beyond that of a conventional bicycle. This example arrived as a remarkably complete survivor, providing an excellent foundation for restoration.
The Restoration
The objective was to return the tandem to its original standard while respecting the quality of the machine's original construction. Every chrome component was stripped and re-chromed, restoring the bright finishes that were such a defining feature of bicycles from this period.
The frame was refinished using a traditional enamel process, creating the deep black finish associated with high-quality British bicycles of the era. Particular attention was paid to preserving original details, including a pair of period Brooks saddles whose natural patina provided a striking contrast to the freshly restored frame and brightwork.
The Result
The finished tandem reflects the qualities that made Chater Lea such a respected name in British cycling: careful engineering, restrained styling and exceptional build quality. Restored to a standard worthy of its original makers, it once again presents as a machine designed to cover long distances with ease.
Today it stands as an excellent example of post-war British cycle manufacture and a reminder of the remarkable craftsmanship that characterised the country's finest touring bicycles.
