1952 Raleigh Sports Tourist
Touring, Electrified
By the early 1950s, Raleigh had established itself as Britain's largest bicycle manufacturer, offering machines for everything from everyday transport to long-distance touring. The Sports Tourist sat towards the upper end of the utility range, combining Raleigh's dependable roadster design with a number of premium features.
Most notable on this example is its Sturmey-Archer Dynohub, an innovative three-speed hub gear with an integrated dynamo powering the original lighting system. Introduced in the late 1940s, the Dynohub represented a significant advance in cycling technology, providing reliable lighting without the need for separate battery systems.
The Restoration
The bicycle arrived as a remarkably complete and original survivor, making preservation the guiding principle throughout the restoration. Wherever possible, existing components were retained, restored and returned to service rather than replaced.
The frame was refinished using enamel matched closely to Raleigh's original specification, while custom decals were produced in-house using original reference material. Hand-applied box lining completed the finish, and extensive work was undertaken to restore the bicycle's original brightwork, saddle and period fittings.
The Result
The finished Sports Tourist reflects the qualities that made Raleigh bicycles so successful during the post-war period: practicality, reliability and thoughtful engineering. Particular care was taken to preserve the original Dynohub lighting system, a feature rarely found in such complete condition today.
Restored with an emphasis on authenticity rather than replacement, the bicycle remains an excellent example of mid-century British cycle manufacture and one of the more technically interesting touring machines produced during the period.
